Stone Care
Natural stone lasts for generations when it is cared for properly. Here is our simple guide to keeping your surfaces looking their best in Sri Lanka’s warm, humid climate.
Everyday cleaning
- Wipe spills promptly - especially lime, vinegar, wine, coffee, tea and oils.
- Use pH-neutral cleaners or mild soap and warm water with a soft cloth.
- Avoid bleach, vinegar, ammonia, abrasive powders and scouring pads.
- Dry after cleaning to prevent water marks, particularly on polished marble.
Sealing
Most natural stones are porous and benefit from a quality impregnating sealer. As a guide:
- Marble, onyx, travertine and limestone: seal every 6-12 months.
- Granite, quartzite and sandstone: seal every 1-2 years.
- Quartz and sintered stone: non-porous - no sealing needed.
A simple test: sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface. If it darkens the stone within a few minutes, it’s time to re-seal.
By material
Marble & onyx
Beautiful but softer and sensitive to acids, which can etch the polish. Use coasters and chopping boards, and choose a honed finish for floors and bathrooms.
Granite & quartzite
Very hard and heat resistant - ideal for kitchens. Still use trivets for very hot pans and seal periodically.
Quartz
Non-porous and stain resistant, but avoid direct high heat, which can damage the resin. Always use trivets.
Outdoor stone
Sandstone, limestone and slate outdoors can gather algae during the monsoon. Clean with a soft brush and stone-safe cleaner; avoid high-pressure washers on soft stone.
Restoration
Dull, scratched or etched stone can often be restored. Our restoration service grinds, hones, re-polishes and re-seals floors and surfaces to bring them back to life.
